Pyongyang, July 2 (KCNA) -- Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army Kim Jong Un, first secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and first chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK, guided the drill for assessing the swimming ability of the commanding officers of the KPA Navy. The drill organized by the order of the supreme commander was conducted in such a way that the commanding officers of the East Sea Fleet and the West Sea Fleet of the KPA Navy simultaneously started in column formations up to the turn-round point at the distance of 5 km and swam back from it. All the commanding officers of the East Sea Fleet and the West Sea Fleet took part in the swimming drill. Kim Jong Un met the commanding officers prior to the start of the drill and told them that the assessment of their swimming ability was of weighty importance in rounding off the combat readiness of the navy and remarkably bolstering up the combat capabilities by making the training more intense just as the anti-Japanese guerillas did in Mt. Paektu. He said that the commanding officers should become good fighters if the army is to fight well, adding that a modern warfare requires the commanding officers to be prepared not only politically and ideologically and in military technique but physically. "The commanding officers are not qualified if they lack physical ability, no matter what good ideological and moral qualities they have and no matter how high military and technological qualifications they are possessed of as they should stand in the van of the combat ranks," he noted. When the commanding officers are fully prepared, they can always lead intensive training of service personnel, shouting "Forward, following me!" not "Charge ahead!" he said. Saying that the seamen should acquire high ability of swimming, he stressed that only when the commanding officers of the navy are good at swimming, can they lead the seamen and successfully carry out the naval operation for implementing the strategic plan of the supreme command even in vast expanse of sea. The commanding officers renewed their resolution to fully display the might of Kim Jong Un's Navy in the assessment event, regarding the drill for assessing the swimming ability to be staged before the supreme commander as a battle field without gunfire. He issued an order to start the drill. The participants fully demonstrated the swimming ability they have cultivated in their day-to-day training, displaying great persevering strength, will and team spirit. The West Sea Fleet was highly appreciated at the drill. Then followed the assessment and review of the drill. He expressed great satisfaction over the successful drill and set forth tasks to be fulfilled to round off the combat readiness and bolster up the combat capabilities of the naval units including the work for making swimming drill a rule and part of life of the seamen so that they may satisfactorily perform their combat missions under any circumstances. He was accompanied by KPA Vice Marshal Hwang Pyong So, director of the General Political Bureau of the KPA, Army General Pyon In Son, first vice-chief of the KPA General Staff and director of its Operation Bureau, and Army Col. Gen. Pak Jong Chon, vice-chief of the KPA General Staff. -0- (2014.07.02)

New figures released today show 162 people lost their lives on UK coasts in the last year, with adult men accounting for 74% of deaths and 77% over the past five years. • Only 3% of Brits know how to react if they unexpectedly fall into cold water • 40% would follow a potentially life-threatening instinct of immediately trying to swim • Coastal fatality figures released today show that 162 people lost their lives on UK coasts in 2016 We’re told to trust our instincts but today the RNLI is calling on the public to fight their instincts should they get into trouble in UK waters and, instead, remember one simple skill – floating. Sudden immersion in water any temperature below 15C puts people at severe risk of cold water shock. This triggers the instinctive but life-threatening reaction to gasp uncontrollably, thrash about and try to swim hard. This reaction is the worst thing to do and can quickly lead to drowning as it increases the chance of water entering the lungs, increases strain on the heart, cools the skin and reduces buoyancy by letting air escape from clothing. The RNLI’s advice is to float for around 60-to-90 seconds – the time it takes for the effects of the cold shock to pass and for you to regain control of your breathing. The recommended floating position is to lean back in the water and keep your airway clear while keeping calm to maintain breathing levels. You should then be in a better position to attempt to swim to safety or call for help. Only 3% of respondents in the RNLI’s research cited floating as the first action they would take if they fell in to cold water unexpectedly. 40% of respondents said their immediate reaction would be to swim, while 2% said they would panic – two of the instinctive responses the RNLI is urging people to fight. Others said they would remove clothing (4%); do nothing (3%); hold their breath (1%), and 4% said they would not know what to do. Coastal fatality figures released today by the RNLI show 162 people lost their lives at the UK coast in the last year alone, with adult men accounting for 74% of deaths and 77% over the past five years. With the charity’s national drowning campaign Respect the Water now entering its fourth year, this year the RNLI are calling on the public to fight their instincts. RNLI Coastal Safety Manager Ross Macleod says: ‘Through our Respect the Water campaign, we want to start a national conversation about water safety. We’re asking the public to remember this lifesaving advice, share with others and practice the survival skill of floating – it could be the difference between life and death. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION : • The fatality figures quoted are for water-related fatalities from accidents and natural causes in UK tidal waters. The figures for 2012–2016 are: 163, 167, 163, 168 and 162. • In 2016, swimming, jumping in and general leisure use of the water accounted for 25% (40) of the deaths, walking and running 20% (32); commercial use of the water 16% (26); sailing and boating 10% (17). Unknown activity was 16% (26). WEBLINKS: www.respectthewater.com #RespecttheWater

You might not be lucky enough to have somewhere warm and sunny or an open water venue near to where you live. But don't worry, you could actually replicate a lot of your open water skills in the local pool, meaning you're nice and confident and ready for race day. We've put together some great techniques and drills that you can do that'll simulate that open water environment that you can do in your next pool session. Subscribe to GTN: http://gtn.io/SubscribetoGTN Check out the GTN Shop: http://gtn.io/6d Thanks to Club La Santa for the locations used in this shoot. So at the start of a lot of triathlons a lot of bodies in the water together and unless you're on the front row of he grid, you're likely to have someone's feet in close proximity to your face. There's often nothing that you could do about that but you can be prepared. And it's actually quite a good thing to do to practise in training starting right behind somebody else so when it comes to race day it's not quite so much of a shock. Treading water's quite a valuable skill to have especially for triathlon, as often a race will have a deep water start and the organisers try and get you into the water well before, sometimes up to 10 minutes. So you don't want to be like frantically wasting your energy, you want to try and stay nice and relaxed and focused on your race. The general technique for this is you need to tread water by using a bit of a backstroke leg kick or an egg beater kick as we call it, and sculling with your arm. But don't fret, you're generally gonna have a wetsuit on so you can be nice and buoyant anyway. Once you've been treading water, you'll start coming to a more horizontal position and start sculling with your arms and kicking with your legs as you're ready for the starter's horn. This is a great activity to practise in the pool. You can do it with fellow athletes. All line up in a line and basically get your coach to count you down as it would be a start and it's all about accelerating straight into your stroke from this position. Now you can also replicate swimming 'round a turn buoy but using the black tee at the bottom of a swimming pool. And obviously if you can take a lane row path it makes it even more realistic. Try doing it with a few other people and then it turns into more of a race day situation. One of the most annoying things in open water swimming is when your goggles start to leak or come off. You probably save more time by actually stopping and clearing them. You can either do this by just stopping outright, treading a bit of water, clearing them and putting them back on or if you want to try and keep moving, and why not flip onto your back. These tips will you make you a lot more confident and relaxed going into your next open water swim race. If you've enjoyed this video, give it a like and share with your triathlon friends.
